Monsoon-Proofing Your Bag: A Survival Guide

Every June, our care inbox fills with the same photograph: a beautiful leather bag, caught in the season's first downpour, blotched and stiff. Most of that damage is preventable, and almost all of it is treatable if you act in the first five minutes.

Prevention starts with rotation. The monsoon is the season for waxed canvas, coated fabrics and saffiano-textured leathers — materials that shrug off water. Aniline and nappa leathers, which drink water like a sponge, should sit the season out in their dust bags, stuffed and stored with a silica pouch.

If a leather bag does get soaked: blot immediately with any absorbent cloth — never rub, which drives water and dirt into the pores. Empty it completely, stuff it loosely with newspaper or tissue to hold shape, and let it dry at room temperature for a full day. Radiators, sunlight and hair dryers are how water spots become permanent cracks.

Once fully dry, the leather will feel slightly stiff because water has displaced its natural oils. This is the moment for conditioner: a thin, even coat of neutral balm restores suppleness and, applied regularly, builds a degree of water resistance for the next surprise shower.

And a habit worth keeping year-round: the humble rain cover. A folded dry-bag or even a plastic pouch in your bag's back pocket weighs nothing and turns a sprint through a cloudburst from a disaster into an anecdote.
